I saw Jaws or some sort of extrication tool in one of the pics on fs80.org. I didnt necessarily mean the crash tenders have jaws or not,but was wondering which, if any, of the LAX units have extrication tools.

Stumbled on this. What the heck is a USAR Tender?
I assume that these units are " satallite units " to get additional personal and small equipment to and from the emergency scene

I thought that's what plug buggies were for.

yeah you are right but have a look at this ....... this is basically the same
Dozer Tenders:
Figure 5-C - Dozer tender
Dozer tenders are utility vehicles used along side dozers when working on fire lines. They carry additional equipment necessary for brush firefighting operations, and also serve as a maintance vehicle for dozer work.
http://lafd.info/ind...2C_Water_Tender
therefore I assume that the USAR Tender serves the same purpose

I was just wondering how the USAR units work in real life? How are they staffed? Are they cross-manned? How many staff respond on it?
Thanks,
Dan.

Hi,

USAR means "Urban Search and Rescue." I believe the USAR in LA is staffed with 4 people on a truck, specially trained in Urban Search and Rescue, high risk environments (building collapse other structural damage that puts a structure at risk of collapse) trench rescues, confined space rescues, and I believe aircraft crashes as well.
I'm not sure if my info is all completely accurate, so anybody with corrections, please correct me.

That's incorrect.
There are six USARs in the LAFD (3, 5, 27, 85, 88, and 89). Out of the six, only USAR 88 is staffed 24/7 with two USAR certified firefighters. The other five USARs are cross staffed by firefighters from the task force at their station.

They are always two bls engines. A regular task force is a truck(tiller) and 2 bls. Hazmat Task Force - 2 BLS and a Hazmat Truck. USAR Task Force - USAR Truck and 2 BLS.
That's incorrect.
A USAR always rolls with the task force in their station. Someone from the TF will drive the USAR to the scene in addition to the TF responding. The whole station is USAR certified. Tge only excption to this is USAR 88, which will still respond with the TF but is staffed with two firefighters 24/7. As you can see in the photoset here, both TF 89 and USAR 89 are on the scene.
HAZMAT squads are slightly different, since they'll respond to regular structure fires and such. The entire station is HAZMAT certified, but the squad (with the exception of squad 95) is staffed with four firefighters in addition to the other units at the station. For HAZMAT responses the squad will usually roll with the TF, but for structure fires and such the squad will respond alone.
I recently came across a post on emtbravowest.com stating that all of B13's engines are assessment (due to the high call volume), so apparantly task force some task force engines are assessment, but only the ones in south LA.

Tough to tell, but it looks like it is possibly the Whelen Justice
Edit: http://www.whelen.co...=17&prod_id=395
Actually, on second look I don't think it is the one I listed.

I imagine they probably got rid of old WT 77 and kept old WT 88 as a reserve since it has a 4000 gallon tank.

Its been 8 months since Mike updates the guide. Sadly I dont suspect to see another update soon. This guide needs to be updated. The new water tenders are now in service.
