I still can't......it says file size exceeds 500kb

You can change (choose) what extension format to be saved. In the free version also have JPG format :)

If you want to be 100% sure that you will haven't problems with uploads, it's better to change the standard format with JPG
I never try these formats...

You can but bmp is a completely uncompressed image format, so while it offers better quality pictuers, it also makes for much much larger file sizes. PNG is similar. JPG offers a reduced quality picture but a much smaller file size.
